MCD celebrated 5 years of developing in 2008

2003
MCD was established, and inherited IMA experienced team. MCD is a Vietnamese non-profit organisation and was officially established by Decision 126/QD – HBVN of VIMASTA, the license registration number A-088 by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

2000 – 2003
The International Marinelife Alliance (IMA) – an international NGO and forerunner of MCD, implemented projects regarding the preservation of marinelife in Vietnam through a project office. The activities focused on: innovating fishing commerce, preserving coral reef, improving awareness of community about preserving the sea by cleaning international beaches and introducing the concept of  “Locally Managed Marine Area” (LMMA) in Vietnam through the Trao Reef model in Van Ninh district (Khanh Hoa).

At the end of 2002, IMA transferred the management of the model to the local community. As there was a need for conserving and integrating with communication development, IMA supported the idea of converting the alliance into a Vietnamese organisation that continued in the same vain as IMA, but more connected with the actual needs of the community in Vietnam.

2003 - 2005
MCD continued to support local community to implement Trao Reef model in Khanh Hoa and expanded the project site to the area of National Park in Xuan Thuy (Nam Dinh), the first Ramsar in Vietnam. With the support of the McKnight Foundation, MCD implemented sustainable fisheries management model in Xuan Thuy National Park. As well, with the support of the small project foundation of the European Union, MCD has presented the concept of community-based ecotourism as an additional livelihood in this area.

2006 - 2007
MCD implemented a series of project activities in two provinces: Khanh Hoa and Nam Dinh. The model for coral reef management in the central region and the model for new livelihoods in wetland areas expanded both in terms of depth and scale.
MCD continued to receive the support of old and new donors including Mcknight Foundation, Oxfam Novib, and The Australian Technical Cooperation.
Also in this period, MCD reorganised the structure to fit with its operational scale. Especially important, MCD and Oxfam Novib worked together to expand cooperation with the European Union.  MCD began to work on Climate Change together with other organizations.

2008
The project sponsored by the EU ran in three provinces: Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Khanh Hoa and within four years, from 2008 to 2011. MCD continued to perfect and institutionalize the   Trao Reef model, biosphere reserve, Gender and fisheries; and was a co-founder of Vietnam Civil Society Organisation and Climate Change.

Some important achievements in 2008: Completing and operating structure of MCD, Anniversary "MCD - 5 years a way to develop"; Supporting the position and official establishment of  "Trao Reef marine ecosystem protected area” in Van Hung (Khanh Hoa); Coordinating the launching ceremony and operating the “Red river delta biosphere” in Nam Dinh city; Joining the SEAfish network and organising successful national seminar and Southeast Asia workshop on "Women in Fisheries"; Co-founding and holding the seminar “Vietnam Civil Society Organisation and Climate Change "...
