Phu Long Commune – A Place of Natural Beauty in the Cat Ba Islands Bio-sphere Reserve

Last week I spent three days in the Phu Long Commune on Cat Ba Island.  The people were kind and welcoming, the food was delicious and the community was interesting; all-in-all the trip was a great success.  But the most notable part of the trip, in my opinion, was the incredible natural beauty of the area.

5th IUCN Asia Regional Conservation Forum: some highlights  |  26/10/2011

Together with a delegation drawn from IUCN’s five Vietnamese State and NGO members led by MONRE Vice-Minister Tran Hong Ha, I attended IUCN’s Regional Conservation Forum (RCF) in Incheon, Korea on September 27-29, 2011. This RCF, which was attended by over 600 participants, was the ninth of the 11 regional forums that IUCN will organize in the run up to the World Conservation Congress (WCC) that will take place in Jeju, Korea in September 2012. Sweden and Vietnam are working together to increase the resilience of coastal and island areas of internationally recognized Biosphere Reserves - Initial updates from the field  |  14/9/2011

100 local key authority officers and about 500 of local community members in two biosphere reserves Red River Delta (Nam Dinh, Thai Binh province) and Cat Ba Island (Hai Phong City) of Vietnam have been inspired through series of planning and stakeholders consultation at all level on the new initiative to address the issues of climate change impacts.

Eco-tourism, Red river delta  |  25/8/2011

Despite the grey cold winter, flocks of birds flapped their wings, appearing and disappearing amidst the tree line of Xuan Thuy National Park. For the villagers of Giao Xuan who have found livelihoods that also support conservation efforts, it is more than a signal that winter is nearly ending. It is also a sign of food starting to teem again in the coastal wetlands, and of better days for small-scale women farmers and fishers in the Red River Delta.

A successful case of livelihood diversification  |  6/1/2011

When visiting the environment-friendly livelihoods extension club in Giao Xuan commune, Giao Thuy district, Nam Dinh province, you will have the chance to see some good examples of garden improvement and compost making from organic waste. They are expanding in scale inside and outside the commune. A typical example is “que” earth-worm raising model in Mr. Nguyen Van Hanh’s family unit 16 in Xuan Hung village, Giao Xuan commune.
