Timely support for greater efficacy of waste collection in the coastal waters of Ha Long Bay

13. 10. 2020 MCD 69

On October 6, 2020, MCD handed over 3 floating waste bins to the communities of three project wards (Bach Dang, Hong Hai and Hong Gai) in an effort to improve the efficiency of waste collection in the coastal waters of Ha Long Bay. This practical and helpful support from MCD was appreciated by the Public Utilities Management Board of Ha Long city.

Mr. Le Thanh Quynh – Deputy Director of the Public Utilities Management Board of Ha Long city, asserted: “The practice of collecting waste and preventing marine dumping in the coastal waters has been the attention of the city’s solid and plastic marine waste management. The Public Utilities Management Board is delighted to receive MCD’s support in terms of advices on technology, communication and especially equipment to improve the efficiency of waste collection. Such supports help enhance the city’s waste management process and stimulate a perceptual and behavioural change among the residents in the coastal waters of the 3 wards, endorsing the preservation of the marine environment in Ha Long Bay area and the reduction of marine plastic waste at large.”

This activity belongs to the interventions at the coastal water area of Ha Long Bay of a pilot multilateral cooperation model, whose objective is to enhance the efficiency of waste collection, classification and treatment at the waste hot spot – Local Fishing Port and Ha Long Market 1. The pilot model is the essential part of the project “Lessons learnt from demonstrated Municipal Plastic Waste Management in World Heritage Ha Long Bay, Vietnam”, funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), implemented by MCD in coordination with local partners in Ha Long city, Quang Ninh Province. The general goal of the project is to improve the effectiveness of the current on- and off-shore plastics waste collection, sorting and treatment processes, hereby contributing to a significant reduction of plastics pollution of the UNESCO World Heritage Ha Long Bay marine environment.
