Conference to summarize and share a good pratice of ASC Group Certified Black Tiger Shrimp – Rice in Tri Luc Commune, Thoi Binh District, Ca Mau Province

On October 27 at Thoi Binh District People’s Committee, Ca Mau Province, the Center for Marine Life Conservation and Community Development (MCD) collaborated with partners to organize “Conference to summarize and share a good pratice of ASC Group Certified Black Tiger Shrimp – Rice in Tri Luc commune, Thoi Binh district, Ca Mau province”.

Overview of the conference

There were 112 delegates attended the event including representatives of provincial departments, including: Department of Agriculture and Rural Development; Department of Science and Technology; Union of Science and Technology Associations; Sub-Department of Fisheries; Standing District Party Committee, People’s Council, People’s Committee of Thoi Binh district and divisions, departments and branches of Thoi Binh district; Representatives of the People’s Committee and the Agriculture Department of the districts: U Minh, Tran Van Thoi, Cai Nuoc, Dam Doi and Ca Mau City; Representative of Tri Luc rice-shrimp cooperative and cooperative members; representatives of communes in Thoi Binh district; Minh Phu Social Enterprise and its partners; representatives of the Control Union certification organization and MCD, WWF and press agencies in Ca Mau province and the Mekong Delta region.

The conference aims to evaluate, summarize and share the progress of ASC Group Certified Black Tiger Shrimp – Rice model in Tri Luc commune, Thoi Binh district, Ca Mau province and promote cooperation, coordinate with stakeholders to develop sustainable linked farming areas according to certification standards.

At the Conference, key parnters shared and presented lessons learned and success of the rice-shrimp model, including (i) current status and planning development of the rice-shrimp model in Ca Mau province; (ii) advantages of the model of Rice Shrimp meeting ASC Standards; (iii) key results and lessons learned from MCD project to support sustainable rice shrimp development and climate change adaptation in Tri Luc commune.

Minh Phu Social Enterprise has been awarded ASC group certification for rice-shrimp farming area in Tri Luc commune, Thoi Binh district, Ca Mau province for 252 households, with 387 ponds with an area of 564.98 hectares. This is the first group ASC certification granted on rice-shrimp models of Ca Mau and Vietnam. Opening a “new door” for international certification (ASC, BAP, Organic…) for rice shrimp models for nearly 40,000 hectares in Ca Mau and nearly 200,000 hectares in the Mekong Delta, contributing to the development of people’s livelihoods with the “smart” rice-shrimp model and adapt to climate change.

With the results achieved, Thoi Binh District People’s Committee has shared the plan to expand the model and orientation of organic rice shrimp production with a focus on developing and replicating to other communes in the near future. Ca Mau Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has recognized the success of the black tiger shrimp-rice model, committed to supporting policies and promoting cooperation in maintaining and expanding the certification of rice-shrimp farming areas in Tri Luc commune and other communes in Thoi Binh district and Ca Mau province.

MCD highly appreciates the cooperation of partners in Ca Mau province and members of Tri Luc cooperative to make rice shrimp model successful up to now. Through the operation of the rice shrimp model, it has also shown the community’s interest in the role of women and sharing of work responsibilities in the family and business. MCD wishes to enhance collaboration and resources so that livelihood initiatives and sustainable rice farming practices in the climate change adaptation are further supported and replicated.

The activity is undertaken within the framework of the project “Gender Transformative & Responsible Agribusiness Investments in South East Asia – GRAISEA 2.0”  implemented by MCD in collaboration with partners in Ca Mau and support of OXFAM. The objective of the project is to strengthen the capacity of small-scale producers, especially women, to get equal opportunities and benefits, and to collaborate enterprises to increase business efficiency in applying and implementing the social responsibility standards, in the shrimp value chain and climate change adaptation.
